Association Awards
Award Deadlines are February 26, 2010
Each year the Association provides the membership with two awards.
They are the Outstanding Mayor Award, and the Annual Scholarship Award.
Applications for the 2010 Outstanding Mayor Award are now being accepted.
To be considered for the award, the quintessential mayor does far more than is outlined in the Borough Code. He is a respected leader of his community who unselfishly contributes his time and talents to the betterment of the overall community and relates to all people.
Interested mayors must submit a resume to be reviewed by a committee appointed by the President of the Association, with the award presented at the annual PSAB convention.
The mayor must be all things to all people. Although citizens are not familiar with mayoral duties as prescribed in the Borough Code, they look to him as the answer to all community problems. Qualifications, which have been amended, now permit members of the Executive Committee to be eligible for the award. Previously, they were exempted from consideration.
Overall qualifications for the award are as follows:
The nominee must be an Association member and have completed one full term of four years in office.
The nominee must be recommended by a county mayors association or by an elected official of the mayor's borough.
Nominations must be submitted on borough letterhead and forwarded to the President of the Association.
All activities (membership, honors, etc.) must have occurred while in office and include length of service (from-to), community organizations served, showing dates and position held; and a description of involvement in other community projects and the extend of participation.
Nominations can be sent to Association Secretary/Treasurer Tim Palmieri at 602 Golf Course Road, Aliquippa, PA 15001.

All nominations will be reviewed by a sub-committee appointed by the President of the Association.
Annual Scholarship
In addition, two $1,500 scholarships will also be awarded at the annual meeting to children or grandchildren of members in good standing Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania only.
Qualifications for the scholarship award are as follows:
The candidate must submit a high school transcript.
The candidate must list all school activities and offices held. A letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor of the high school where the candidate is attending school, and from a teacher of the student in the 12th grade must be provided.
A listing of examples of community service must be provided.
A copy of the letter of notification of admission from a college or university where the nominee will be attending is required.
An informal letter in the individual's handwriting for the purpose of enabling the scholarship committee to become acquainted with the nominee and why the nominee wants to attend college, and what they expect of a college education, must be completed.
In relationship to an Association member, the application of the nominee shall be from a high school senior who is a son, daughter, grandson or granddaughter of a current Association member in good standing.
There is no restriction requiring the candidate to be a native of Pennsylvania, or if he/she is planning to attend a Pennsylvania college or university.
The committee requests the right to use discretion if there are no candidates who are going into areas of public administration, which has been identified as the specific area of Association interest.
It is the committee's intention to appoint a young man and young woman each year if they are qualified for the awards. In the event there are no male or female candidates, then the committee will use its discretion in appointing two candidates of the same sex.

Deadline for submitting applications for both awards is February 27, 2010.
